Marc Caplan
Brownstone Visiting Professor of Jewish Studies
I am a native of Louisiana and a graduate of Yale University. Since earning my PhD in comparative literature from New York University I have lived and worked in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maryland, back in New York City, Michigan, back at Yale, Vienna, Austria, and Wroclaw, Poland. My research focuses primarily on modern Yiddish literature in comparison with African literatures in English and French (the subject of my first book), German literature (the subject of my second book), and more broadly with modern culture including film, television, theatre, and music. My courses at Dartmouth this year (2020-21) will include a survey of Jewish literature and culture in New York City, as well as a comparison of Jewish and African literature focusing on theories of diaspora.
