Margaret E. Spicer

Since 1974 when she joined the Theater Department faculty at Dartmouth College, Professor Spicer has taught courses in costume design, construction and history and designed costumes for a wide variety of plays and musicals. Julius Caesar, her retirement production, is Margaret Spicer's 81st major production at Dartmouth. In her time on the faculty she has served as Department Chair, Vice-Chair and Director of Theater. In 1988 she was the first woman in the arts at Dartmouth College promoted to the rank of full professor.

In addition to her full-time appointment in the Theater Department, Margaret Spicer is also Adjunct Curator of the Henry B. Williams Costume Collection at Dartmouth's Hood Museum of Art. Since 1975, she has prepared nine exhibitions from the museum's collection, including Dressed in White: Bridal Dresses from the Williams Costume Collection (1988), Crinolines, Bustles and Tight-Lacing: Creating the Artificial Silhouette (1993), and Completing the Picture: Hats, Fashion and Fine Art (2000).

As a lecturer, guest curator and costume consultant, Professor Spicer has worked with numerous museums and historical societies in northern New England. Most recently she was invited to join the Exhibitions and Publications Committee at the New Hampshire Historical Society in Concord. A member of the Costume Society of America since 1975, Margaret Spicer was elected to five terms on the CSA national Board of Directors. In addition she was the co-founder of the CSA's internationally recognized Richard Martin Award for Excellence in Costume Exhibition and served as the award committee's first chair. In 2001 Margaret Spicer was honored by an appointment to Scholars' Roundtable of the Costume Society of America. In 2010, Professor Spicer was awarded the honor of Professor Emerita by the Board of Trustees of Dartmouth College.
