Professor Hughes's interests lie in the areas of mechanistic organometallic, inorganic, and organic chemistry. He currently uses computational methods to determine electronic structure, bonding motifs and reaction pathways in compounds related to catalytically important systems.  He is the 2010 winner of the ACS Award for Creative Work in Fluorine Chemistry, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the American Chemical Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
