Dr. Vu is a pioneer in Earable Computing. He introduced the term "Earable Systems", describing ear-based sensing and stimulation computing systems. These systems use the ear's proximity to key physiological signals—such as brain activity, eye movements, and facial muscles—to capture data with high fidelity and low intrusion. This approach has influenced the technology industry, including companies like Apple and Google, in the development of advanced human-computer interaction and health monitoring tools.
He founded the Mobile and Networked Systems (MNS) Lab, focusing on wearable and mobile systems that leverage physiological signals for enhanced human-computer interactions and healthcare. His research led to more than 35 patents and numerous awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, NSF CAREER Award, Google Faculty Research Awards, and 12 Best Paper Awards.
Dr. Vu has also co-founded two venture-backed companies to translate his research into real-world applications, including Earable Neuroscience, which develops wearables that enhance sleep quality, focus, and other cognitive functions. Earable Neuroscience has made a significant impact, serving over 2,000 users across 28 countries.
As the Founder and CEO of Earable, Dr. Vu has transformed the company from concept to a multinational entity with structured management for hardware production and global distribution. Under his leadership, Earable has grown to over 100 employees and raised more than $10 million from investors like Samsung Ventures and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. The company has received accolades such as CES Innovation Awards (2023, 2024), MUSE Design Award, and Red Dot Design Award. Dr. Vu was also selected as a CES Innovation Judge in 2024. His work has been featured in outlets like BBC, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and NPR.
Dr. Vu currently focuses on longevity, aiming to integrate technologies to promote wellness. He is spearheading initiatives to enhance human performance and longevity through innovative sensing technologies and AI-powered wearables, with a vision to significantly improve human well-being and quality of life.
