I am Professor of Government and Mitsui Professor of Japanese Studies at Dartmouth College’s Department of Government, Program in Quantitative Social Science, and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Program. I am also Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University’s Crawford School of Public Policy and Faculty Associate at Harvard University’s Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies and Program on US-Japan Relations. I earned an M.A. in international and development economics from Yale University in 1995 and a Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2001. My research and teaching interests include comparative politics (electoral politics, political economy, public opinion, Japan) and political methodology (statistical methods, research design). I am the author of Institutions, Incentives and Electoral Participation in Japan: Cross-Level and Cross-National Perspectives (Routledge 2005). I also have articles published or forthcoming in American Journal of Political Science, American Political Science Review, British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, Electoral Studies, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of East Asian Studies, Journal of Politics, Party Politics,Political Psychology, Political Science Research and Methods, Quarterly Journal of Political Science, World Politics, among others.
