Georgina L.H. Escobar

Georgina Escobar is a playwright, director and arts educator who specializes in genre with heart, including musical theatre, modern sci-fi, and other futurity femmetasias. Her practice is deeply influenced by speculative futurism and science fiction told through a feminist perspective and the narrative expression of misunderstood sites of knowledge like memory, women, deserts, and la frontera (borderlands). Her plays have been produced in México, Canada, USA, UK, Italy, Denmark & Sweden. She is a Kilroy's List Writer, and the recipient of the inaugural Gotham & Variety Audio Honors award for groundbreaking audio storytelling, the National Darrell Ayers Playwriting Award, and the Outstanding Service to the Women on the Border Award. Escobar is a Fornés Institute, La MaMa Umbria, MacDowell, Djerassi, and Candela Fellow, a Clubbed Thumb Emerging Writer's Group member and and Alcove Climate Cohort and Project Y writer. She is a National Musical Theatre Conference, Project 121 Lortel Theatre, Rhinebeck, and NAMT Writer (Little Duende) and a National Playwrights Conference Finalist (Stoneheart, 2021 and 2024). Her work has been featured and published in The Texas Review, Routledge, Theatre Topics, Smith & Kraus, Los Bárbaros Spain, McSweeny's Press ("I Know What's Best For You", Inti Press UK, and more. Her plays have been produced Off Broadway at INTAR (Then they forgot about The Rest), Off-Off at Dixon Place (Jones) and JACK (Desaparecidas), and developed in NY and regionally at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, New York Children's Theatre, Clubbed Thumb, Lincoln Center, Bushwick Starr, La MaMa, Two Rivers, Milagro Theatre, Aurora Theatre, Duke City Repertory, and more.Her short film MONAH was a selection at the Austin Film Festival, El Paso Film Festival, and the Brooklyn Sci-Fi Festival. Her short plays have been featured across the country and internationally as part of initiatives like "After Orlando", Climate Change Theatre Action, The Future is Female, and EMILIA ROMAGNA TEATRO FONDAZIONE: Planet B. Un mondo ancora possibile? As an arts educator she has taught at Kingsborough College (CUNY), University of Texas at El Paso, Princeton University, and Dartmouth College. She serves on the Board of the El Paso Holocaust Museum, Marfa Live Arts, is on the Advisory Committee for the Latinx Theatre Commons.
