My research examines the multisensory capacity of works of art to visually represent modernity's political ecologies and materially inscribe the agency of environments, nonhuman objects, animals, plants, and minerals. Approaching modern and contemporary seascape paintings, prints, photographs, and lens-based works not simply as representations but as themselves "sensors" of the ocean's hydraulic, chemical, mineral, and infrastructural operations, I situate art history and material culture studies within contemporary conversations in the Blue Humanities, infrastructure and labor studies, and theories of nonhuman agency. This approach extends art history's attentiveness to the work of art's "autonomy" and to the material, environmental, and institutional conditions of visual production, pressing it toward the nonhuman scales that the discipline's anthropocentric conventions have kept out of view. My driving question is how images of what Donna Haraway calls "natureculture(s)," when situated as sensory agents rather than representations, can shift how we perceive and intertwine with objects and nonhuman subjects as formative agents of art history rather than its inert backdrop.
